ISO 11064 Ergonomic design of control centres provide guidance for control rooms and user interfaces.
This includes 7 parts:
· Part 1: Principles for the design of control centres;
· Part 2: Principles for the arrangement of control suites;
· Part 3: Control room layout;
· Part 4: Layout and dimensions of workstations;
· Part 5: Displays and controls;
· Part 6: Environmental requirements for control rooms;
· Part 7: Principles for the evaluation of control centres.
While control room design and layout can be based on an agreed set of principles derived from ISO 11064 it is important that the context of control room operations is well understood and operational input and feedback and effective HFE analysis is also considered.
Project specific HFE Specifications for control centre design should be developed to include specific guidance on control room location and important functional relationships; console and workstation design, orientation, and layout; communication systems and panels design; and detailed working environment requirements.
The following table from ISO11064 provides a design process flow for the design of control rooms.
