Human Factors Integration (HFI) in projects is a systematic approach to ensure the effective application of Human Factors Engineering (HFE) throughout the project lifecycle. It aims to identify required HFE activities early in the project as part of the Early Human Factors Analysis (EHFA). Considerations include:
• Size of the project – the extent to which new equipment and processes are being introduced
• Complexity of the project – the extent to which new technologies or processes which may require additional skills, varying work demands and/or unique configurations
• The number and complexity of human interfaces
• The context of use and potential interactions with existing systems/assets
• Level of safety risk for the project and future operations including the consideration of the impacts of human error on personal or system safety
• The number and complexity or safety critical tasks required for future operations
• The use of automation and/or automated systems
• Criticality of unplanned works and/or degraded modes of operation
• Regulatory and/or assurance requirements
• Will any of the follow design components require consideration:
o Access and egress
o Equipment access and interfaces
o Operability and maintainability
o Sampling and inspections
o Manual valves and general valve design/layout
o Control panels and instrumentation design /layout
o Hazardous materials handling analysis
o Human machine interface (HMI)
o Alarm studies
o Control room design/layout
o Critical equipment labelling
o Specific user trials and scenario testing
The table provided below show HFE activities across the engineering lifecycle.
