Human Factors in Control Centre Design

Operations control centres are complete work environments and can be demanding. Simple operator errors such as incorrect actions, omissions, mis-interpretations or sequencing errors can be potentially disastrous. Therefore the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has developed a comprehensive suite of technical documents support effective control centre design. They aim to support effective design of control centres to minimise the risk of human failure, effectively incorporate ever developing automation systems and the changing role humans play in control centres, and ensure adequate integration with the wider operational context.

The headings of the eight publications are provided below along with a link to additional information.

  • — Part 1: Principles for the design of control centres
  • — Part 2: Principles for the arrangement of control suites
  • — Part 3: Control room layout
  • — Part 4: Layout and dimensions of workstations
  • — Part 5: Displays and controls
  • — Part 6: Environmental requirements for control rooms
  • — Part 7: Principles for the evaluation of control centres
  • — Part 8: Ergonomic requirements for specific applications
