Internal Human Factors Governance

Coretex Consulting has been supporting the Water Corporation in Perth and throughout Western Australia to develop internal standards and guidelines to ensure effective consideration of Human Factors Integration (HFI) and Human Factors Engineering (HFE) within the project lifecycle.

Typcally the two documents described below are sufficient to support projects to identify and execute HFE activities and achieve effective consideration of HFE in the design of plant, equipment and work processes

Human Factors Engineering Design Standard / Specification can include information on the following:

a.      Most common design elements for an organisation (e.g. valves, instrumentation, piping, clearances, accessibility, walkways, primary and secondary pathways, chemical processing etc)

b.      Most common safety critical tasks undertaken

c.       Most common operational and maintenance activities to consider in the design

Human Factors Intergation in Projects Guideline to include principles and activities such as:

a.      Outline the key HFE activities and hold points across the project lifecycle

b.      Define the HFE roles and responsibilities for each stakeholder across the project lifecycle

c.       Provide a screening tool for planners to identify projects which require ‘a lot’ or ‘a little’ HFE which, for example, can include:

  1. Does the project require consideration of HFE?
  2. If so, what is the required level of HFE input?
  3. What level of HF-competent resource will be required and what roles should be established?
  4. What HFE activities will be required?
  5. What specific HF risks and opportunities exist based on the scope of the facilities being developed?
